“I’m a Man without Conviction….”.

Boy George was part of the New Romantic which emerged in the late 1970s to early 1980s. His androgynous look and style of fashion was greatly inspired by glam rock pioneers David Bowie and Marc Bolan. He formed Culture Club with Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss in 1981.

I painted him in all his flamboyant glory, with his bold makeup. The energy and confidence he exuded in the video were infectious, and I wanted to capture that in my painting.

As I worked on the piece, I found myself dancing along to the catchy tune of Karma Chameleon, losing myself in the nostalgia of a time when fashion was bold and unapologetic. Boy George was a trailblazer in the world of gender-bending fashion, and his influence can still be seen in the industry today.

When I finally finished the painting, I felt a sense of satisfaction and pride. Boy George may have been a chameleon, constantly changing his look, but his essence always remained the same. He taught me to embrace my individuality and express myself through my style, just as he did.

So here's to you, Boy George, my eternal fashion muse. Thank you for inspiring me to be true to myself and to never be afraid to stand out in a crowd. You may be a chameleon, but you will always be a legend in my eyes.

‘Boy G’. 5x5ft acrylic on canvas.
