Sensing my sadness, David gently reminded me that every wild orphan was ’on loan’ and could never ‘belong’ to us. We were merely custodians for the period that they were dependent and needed our help, but after that their place and quality of life lay not in semi-captivity for the benefit of humans, but with their wild kin.
